Marmon’s 34B was a descendent of the company’s Wasp – the car driven by its creator Ray Harroun to victory in the inaugural Indianapolis 500. Like the Wasp, the 34B featured an advanced 340 cid overhead-valve inline six and largely aluminum body, facilitating cruising speeds in excess of many of its peers.
This 34B is finished in lovely light gray over a beautifully restored interior in rich gray leather accented with lustrous wood and nickel. This example is also distinguished by a Marmon-branded Moto-Meter, running board-mounted Spreadlight searchlight and an onboard air compressor that can be manually engaged for the inflation of tires – an ingenious convenience, courtesy of Howard Marmon, son of the company’s founder.
The Marmon’s restoration was completed around 2005 by Bob Robinson of Robinson Restorations in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, who had actually owned this very car in 1956. He always regretted selling it, and remarkably, he was able to track it down in the mid-1990s. The consignor acquired the Marmon in 2016 and had Robinson Restorations perform work to the carburetor, water pump, cooling system and ignition. In 2023, the 34B returned to Robinson Restorations for minor servicing and it has benefitted from light use in current ownership. A testament to its condition, the 34B has received awards at multiple Concours d’Elegance, including Hilton Head, Greenwich and Radnor Hunt. This highly desirable Marmon 34B Touring is a piece of automotive art, and a CCCA Full Classic with an outstanding story to match.
